The Procession crossing the Merchants' Area, 1844. Opening of the new Royal Exchange building in the City of London. The building was designed by Sir William Tite and was officially opened by Queen Victoria. '...her Majesty, leaning on the arm of Prince Albert, proceeded up the steps of the portico and through it to the entrance of the Merchants' Quadrangle, or, as it is usually termed, the Merchants' Area. Her Majesty was immediately preceded by the Lord Mayor [William Magnay], who carried the City sword of state'. From "Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I.
