Lord Egerton's Fete - the Pavilion at Worsley, 1844. Party to celebrate the 21st birthday of 'George Granville Francis Egerton, Esq., eldest son of Lord and Lady Francis Egerton...the day was celebrated with festivities.  It was the desire of Lord Francis, that the occasion should be made one of popular enjoyment, in and out of doors, through the medium of old English fare and hospitality to the thousands of tenants, dependants, workpeople, including the officers of the various coalpits in the estates, the numerous body of men employed on the Bridgewater Canal...In what is called the Worsley Yard, near the Bridgewater Canal and warehouses, stood a spacious pavilion or marquee, capable of containing between 3000 and 4000 persons, gaily decorated with union jacks, British ensigns, and other flags...colours, streamers etc'.
