Her Majesty's visit to Burghley - the Banquet in the Great Hall, 1844. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were the guests of the Marquis of Exeter, at Burghley House near Stamford, Lincolnshire. The house was built in the 16th century - here we see the timber roof beams in the Great Hall. 'At the north end of the room, at an elevation of upwards of twelve feet, is the Music Gallery, capable of accommodating about fifty performers, and it is said that there are few rooms in the kingdom more excellently constructed to give effect to musical sounds. The Hall is lighted by superb Gothic chandeliers, in character with the decorations of the apartment, which are suspended from the roof'. From "Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V.
