Moose deer, at the Surrey Zoological Gardens, 1844. 'The Elk, Alces americanus...is a female, and of course destitute of horns. The male of the species has, we believe, been domesticated in some part of the extreme northern part of North America; and we are not without hopes that the present animal, being a female, may show the practibility of its naturalization here. During its residence in the gardens it has shown itself to be extremely timid, flying the face of strangers, and seeking the most undisturbed quietude. The cold of our extreme winter has apparently refreshed its hardy nature'. From "Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V.
