St. Goar, on the Rhine, 1845. A small town in the Rhine Gorge in Germany. 'St. Goar, a post-town...lies in the midst of the glories of the Rhine, in sight of some of its finest scenes; and is, therefore, a very desirable spot for tourists to halt in for a day. The views in its vicinity are among the most picturesque in the whole course of the river, and the rocks which hem it on both sides are sublimely wild and precipitous. The Castle of Rheinfels, magnificent in appearance, and interesting from its history, rewards the trouble of the ascent, by the enchanting view which it commands'.
