Charlecombe Church, near Bath, 1845. The Church of St Mary, at Charlcombe in Somerset, dates from the 12th century. 'This ancient Christian temple is situated at a short distance from Bath, and is generally termed "the mother of the Bath churches." It has a very low embattled square tower, which projects over the principal gable, and is partly supported by rude corbels; the buttresses, also, are of very primitive form; there is a small, low, entrance doorway. The church is much visited for its antiquity; and in the churchyard is an antique yew-tree, reported to be twelve hundred years old. It is, altogether, a beautifully sequestered "haunt of meditation."' From "Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII.
