Confirmation of the Bishop of Oxford, at Bow Church, 1845. The confirmation of Dr. Samuel Wilberforce at St Mary-le-Bow Church in the City of London. The ceremony was conducted by Dr. Burnaby. British cleric Samuel Wilberforce was a strong oppononent of Darwin's theory of natural selection. His well-known charm earned him the nickname 'Soapy Sam'. He was the son of William Wilberforce, philanthropist and campaigner for the abolition of slavery. From "Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII.
