Carte-de-visite of Walter W. Johnson shown in half portrait. Johnson was and American civil engineer, explorer, surveyor, and teacher of freedmen. He is turned one quarter to his right and looks off camera. His hair is moderately long and wavy and he has a full beard and mustache. His cheeks are tinted pink. He wears a dark jacket with wide notched lapels, a dark vest, a white shirt, and a dark bowtie. The bottom portion of the image is purposefully faded in the popular style of the time.;Handwritten in graphite at the bottom of the print is the text "Walter W. Johnson / killed by falling down the / shaft of a mine in Va. 25 Jan. / 1879". There is a mark for Henry Ulke on the back of the print.;The photograph is housed in the album 2017.30. The album page has a triple-lined, gold border framing the print.
