This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860. This document is an agreement between John Rouzee and John Hirshaw regarding the hire of the enslaved woman Nelly and her children. One side contains Rouzee's letter to Hirshaw requesting they be returned well clothed and stating that Hirshaw will be paid four (4) dollars, which is the balance he is owed for moving the enslaved persons to Culpeper. Rouzee's message is dated December 22, 1810 from Epping Forest. The reverse side contains Hirshaw's written response to Rouzee, dated December 26, 1810, in which he asks for five (5) instead of four (4) dollars from Rouzee. Both sides are handwritten in black ink.
