This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860. This handwritten, single page document is an account of taxes owed by the estate of John Rouzee to the Sheriff of Essex County for the year 1823. The taxable property is listed as "26 slaves + 4 horses," as well as twenty-two (22) poor and county levies at one (1) dollar and thirty-seven (37) cents, four hundred and ninety-seven (497) acres of land. The total tax amount due was fifty-five (55) dollars and thirty-five (35) cents.It is noted that payment by Edward Rouzee was received November 24, 1823. On the reverse is written "Est. Jn Rouzee" along with ntoes on the amount and date paid. Both sides are written in black ink.
