This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860. This handwritten, single page document is a tax account for Edward Rouzee to the sheriff of Essex County dated October 1, 1828. It lists the taxes owed on "18 slaves, 13 horses + 1 Gig, 18 county and poor levies, 798 1/4 acres of land" and money owed the clerk of Essex. The amounts due are recorded in a column on the right side and totaled at $45.44.
