This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860. This handwritten, single page document is an account of taxes owed by the estate of John Rouzee to Sheriff of Essex County for the year 1819. The taxable property is listed as "25 slaves, 7 horses, and 1 Coachee," twenty-two (22) levies and four hundred and ninety-seven (497) acres of land. The total amount of taxes due were sixty (60) dollars and three (3) cents. It is noted that payment was received on October 18, 1819. On the reverse is written, "J Rouzee Estate" along with notes on the date and amount paid. Both sides are written in black ink.
