This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860. This handwritten, single page document is an account of taxes owed to the Sheriff of Essex County by Edward Rouzee for the year 1819. The taxable property is listed as "24 slaves, 11 horses, 1 buggy," twenty-three (23) levies, four hundred and fifty-four (454) and two hundred and ninety-three (293) acres of land, and the clerk's fee. At the bottom it is noted that payment was received on the 19th of October 1819, and there is an illegible signature in the bottom right. On the reverse is written "Edward Rouzee Acct. Sheriff for taxes 1819." Both sides are written in black ink.
