This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860. This handwritten, single page document is an account of taxes owed by Edward Rouzee for the year 1817. The taxable property is listed as "28 neg + 11 horses," as well as seven hundred and forty-eight (748) acres of land, twenty-nine (29) levies at ninety-two (92) cents each. There is also a discount of one (1) dollar and ninety-three (93) cents which brings the total tax amount due to eighty-three (83) dollars and ninety-one (91) cents. On the reverse, it is noted that payment was received from James Hunter on October 2, 1817, along with notes on the account, date, and amount paid. Both sides are written in brown ink.
