This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860. This handwritten, single page document is an account of taxes owed by Edward Rouzee to the Sheriff of Essex County for the year 1841. The taxable property is listed as "26 slaves, 15 horses and Buggy," four hundred and fifteen (415), eighty-seven (87), two hundred and ninety-seven (297), and one hundred and six (106) acres of land, and twenty-six (26) county and poor levies. The itemized account listing is written in blue ink, the receipt for payment is written in brown ink and signed by Edward Rouzee and dated October 22, 1841. Further notes and accounting figures are written on the reverse in brown ink.
