This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860. This handwritten, single page document is an account of taxes owed by the John Rouzee estate for the year 1816. The taxable property is listed as "33 negroes, 12 horses and 32 cattle," as well as four hundred and ninety-seven (497) acres of land, twenty-six (26) levies at one (1) dollar and twenty-eight (28) cents each, clerks notes, and account for tallow from 1814. The amount of taxes due was one hundred and nine (109) dollars and ninety-eight (98) cents. Payment was received October 26, 1815 by Alexander Finley. The document is signed in the lower right corner by Robert Hill. On the reverse is written, "Sheriffs acct. rec'd for taxes" along with notes on the date and amount paid. Both sides are written in black ink.
