This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860. This handwritten, single page document is an account of taxes owed by Edward Rouzee to the Sheriff of Essex County for the year 1813. The taxable property is listed as "28 negroes 13 horses + 1 Coachie," as well as seven hundred and forty-eight (748) acres of land and twenty-six (26) levies at seventy-nine (79) cents each. Payment was recieved on October 27th, 1813. The document is signed at the bottom right by Robert Hill. On the reverse is written "Rouzee" and the amount paid "$64.10." Both sides are written in black ink.
