This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860. This handwritten, single page document is an account of taxes owed by Edward Rouzee to the Sheriff of Essex County for the year 1802. The taxable property is listed as "1 black, 3 horses and 1 Chariot," The total tax amount due was four (4) dollars and ninety-eight (98) cents. It is noted that payment was made September 10, 1803. The document is signed in the bottom right by Robert Hill. On the reverse is written, "Acct Sheriff + E. Rouzee," along with notes on the date and amount paid. Both sides are written in black ink.
