Americanorum Rex, Guisius, from 'Courses de Testes et de Bagues Faittes par Roy et par les Princes et Signeurs de sa Cour, en l'annee 1662' (Grand Carrousel), 1662-70. Louis-Joseph de Lorraine, Duc de Guise, dressed as King of the Americas, wearing an elaborate helmet decorated with ostrich feathers and riding a unicorn with snakes instead of a mane and tail. "Le Grand Carrousel" depicts the festivities organised by King Louis XIV in June 1662, consisting of jousting contests between nobles dressed as Romans, Americans, Persians or Turks.
