Castrorum Praefectus Americanus, from 'Courses de Testes et de Bagues Faittes par Roy et par les Princes et Signeurs de sa Cour, en l'annee 1662' (Grand Carrousel), 1662-70. Praefectus castrorum (camp prefect) in ornate 'American' costume with ostrich-feather headdress. "Le Grand Carrousel" depicts the festivities organised by King Louis XIV in June 1662, consisting of jousting contests between nobles dressed as Romans, Americans, Persians or Turks.
