The Virgin Mary, carrying the infant Jesus, rides a donkey led by her husband Joseph through a desert landscape lit by a full moon. Oil painting by Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937), the first African-American painter to gain international acclaim. He studied with Jean Paul Laurens and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant at the Académie Julian in Paris.
