Northern Alaska Exploring Expedition, 1884-1886. Unloading of supplies from the San Francisco schooner "Viking" onto sand-spit known as Pipe Spit, or Camp Purcell, Alaska. Exploration of the Kobuk River and northern parts of Alaska, led by Lieutenant George M. Stoney of the U.S. Navy. Specimens were collected for the United States National Museum.
