Workers constructing the preliminary mixers at Shoreham Cement Works. John Laing & Son Ltd built a new cement works for Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers Ltd at this chalk quarry in Upper Beeding near Shoreham-By-Sea, with work in the quarry starting in February 1949. The work on the site was varied and complex and included the construction of buildings at the cement works, rail sidings and a coal-handling plant. The typed label beneath the photograph reads 'Completion of inner ring of steel to underside of ring beam. The men at the bottom are preparing to bring up the inner lining of steel.'
