Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, USA. The Wright Brothers Monument is in the distance, and in the foreground is the First Flight Marker, the granite boulder that marks the place that the first take-off of the first airplane was made. On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers first flew a piloted, heavier-than-air, powered machine. Approved by Congress in 1927, the Kill Devil Hill National Memorial includes the Wright Memorial Shaft, a sixty-foot granite monument. On over 300 acres, it was dedicated in 1932.
