Theodore von Karman at the Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, USA, 1950. Hungarian-born Von Kármán came to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in the 1920s to advise the designers of a wind tunnel. A mathematician, aerospace engineer, and physicist who was active primarily in the fields of aeronautics and astronautics, he eventually became director of the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory.
