The Globe, Durlston Head, Swanage, Purbeck, Dorset, 1966. The Globe in the grounds of Durlston Head Castle. The Globe, or Great Globe, was erected in around 1891 by George Burt, who built Durlston Head Castle and developed the estate as a tourist attraction. The globe has a 10 foot radius. Around the base a tablet records the distance to the stars and planets, and to the rear of the globe are a series of panels inscribed with quotations. The Globe is Grade II listed and shows how the Victorians viewed the world, as well as the universe.
