Album Quilt, New York, 1854. Made before the American Civil War (1861-1865), this quilt depicts sensitively portrayed African American figures who seem to be a family, possibly the maker's own. Appliquéd and embroidered brown fabric comprises their faces and hands, with hand-and-heart motif in the bottom right corner. Sarah Ann Wilson may have been a free black woman living in New York.
