Mayday Hospital, London Road, West Thornton, Croydon, London, 01/05/1981. A group of people posed with celebratory drinks on the roof of the services block at Mayday Hospital during the topping out ceremony. Laing’s Southern Region was awarded the contract for the first phase of a multi-million pound five phase redevelopment project at Mayday Hospital. The contract included a new three storey surgical block with a linked service block, which was to be connected to the main hospital complex by bridge. The topping out of the services block at Mayday Hospital was aptly held on May Day. During the ceremony, an engraved silver trowel was presented to Denis Sweaney by Frank Bryer, joint managing director of the Construction Company. The occasion was also marked by the publication of 'Template'; the first in a series of printed information leaflets by the commissioning team, which described the topping out ceremony and provided a floor by floor diagram of the new facilities.
