Eldon Garden shopping centre, Percy Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, 03/07/1989. The central three storey atrium of the shopping centre at Eldon Garden, from the top of an escalator, showing palm trees and plants trailing from balconies. The Eldon Garden shopping centre was a development of 42 shops over 3 storeys and a 477 space car park. Laing secured the £11.5m management contract for the construction in 1987 for Greycoat Shopping Plc. Work began in January 1988 and the centre was open to the public from March 1989 and officially open by Princess Margaret in November 1989. The development had to incorporate the existing pub, now called the Three Bulls Heads. The pub was underpinned and supported whilst its roof was removed and rebuilt so that it was structurally independent of the shopping centre. Eldon Garden is linked to the Eldon Square shopping centre by a 2 storey glazed mall that bridges Percy Street, this had to be constructed overnight when the road could be closed.
