Watering-Places of Devon - Sidmouth, 1850. 'Sidmouth...lies picturesquely sheltered. The beach is nearly in the centre of one of those hollows or curves which are abundant within the vast bay of Devon and Dorset extending from the Isle of Portland...The sea-wall, completed in 1838, not only defends the town from any further encroachments of the sea, but forms a dry and very agreeable promenade upwards of 1700 feet in length. We need scarcely add that the town has the accommodation of a well-appointed watering-place'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
