It is much frequented in the bathing season...The Castle, about one hundred yards west of the monastic ruins, is fitted up as barracks; and within its walls are a lighthouse and some modern buildings - the lighthouse lantern is 148 feet above the level of the sea...It has been supposed that the Romans had a post on the site of Tynemouth Castle'.
