The Creation of Adam, modelled by J. Physick, 1850. 'This figure, illustrative of the "Creation of Adam," has just been modelled by Mr. James Physick, and has obtained for him the honour of studying abroad: the decision having been given at a general assembly of the Royal Academicians, in Trafalgar-square...The height of the figure is about seven feet. The subject is from Milton's great work [Paradise Lost]: "As new waked from soundest sleep, Soft on the flow'ry herb I found me laid In balmy sweat, which with his beams the sun Soon dry'd, and on the reeking moisture fed. Straight toward Heav'n my wond'ring eyes I turn'd, And gazed awhile the ample sky, till raised By quick instinctive motion, up I sprung." Paradise Lost, Book viii'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
