Stag Hunt in the New-Road on Tuesday, 1850. '...the inhabitants of Camden Town [in London] were astonished at the unusual sight of a fine stag, or red deer, running at full speed...with five hounds in full cry at his heels...[The stag] made a bolt at the iron gate, leading through Mabledon-place into Burton-crescent...and terrified at the number of vehicles passing the New-road, he dashed in at the gate in front of the house of Messrs. Prior's stove grate manufactory, whence, seeing the shop door open, he darted into the house, and was there speedily secured. The strange scene attracted some thousands of persons, and it required the assistance of about a dozen policemen to preserve Mr. Prior's railings from destruction...numbers of women and children paid a penny each for admission to the yard to see so strange a visitor...The run, from first to last, was over not less than thirty-five miles...'.
