Interior of Brampford Speke Church, Devon, 1850. In 1847 Rev George Cornelius Gorham BD, was appointed by its Patron to the living of Brampford Speke, but on account of his denial of the doctrine of Baptismal Regeneration the Bishop of Exeter refused to institute him. 'The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council gave judgment, on the 8th inst., in the long-pending suit, "Gorham v. the Bishop of Exeter". No ecclesiastical case has, in modern times, excited such intense interest...The Committee holds that the "doctrines of Mr. Gorham are not contrary or repugnant to the doctrines of the Church of England, as by law established, though they may be contrary to the opinions of many learned and pious persons, and it therefore decides that the Lord Bishop of Exeter has not shown sufficient cause why he did not insiitute Mr. Gorham into the vicarage of Brampford-Speke".'
