Memorial '...from the chisel of Mr. Baily' in Bombay Cathedral: This Monument...to the Memory of Major Eldred Pottinger of the Bombay Regiment of Artillery, In token of the admiration and respect in which his character as a soldier, and conduct as a man, are held by his friends in the Presidency. Major Pottinger's successful defence of Herat, his gallant bearing and judicious counsel, throughout the eventful period of the British reverses in Affghanistan, are recorded in the annals of his country...Compelled by long exertion, anxiety, and fatigue in the discharge of his public duties, to seek a change of climate for the recovery of his health, Major Pottinger was returning to England, via China, when he was attacked by a malignant fever at Hong-Kong, where he died on the 13th of November, 1843, aged 32 years'.
