Nimroud Sculptures Just Received at the British Museum - Human-Headed and Winged Lion, 1850. 'That the interest raised by the exhibition of these remarkable monuments of a remote historic period does not decline, is fully proved by the number of visitors who daily throng the room at the British Museum in which they are deposited...these Marbles are of the greatest importance; whatever may be their real antiquity, they are probably of an earlier date than the first scintillations of Grecian genius, and, therefore, may be reasonably supposed to have exercised some influence over the conceptions and works of the Ionian colonists at least.' From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
