The United States Mail Steam-Ship "Atlantic" entering the Mersey, 1850. 'The Atlantic arrived at Liverpool on the 10th [May]., the first of six similar vessels to be built for E. K. Collins, Esq., of New York, to carry the United States mails between New York and Liverpool, in conjunction with the Cunard steamers. [She]...is stated to be the largest steam-ship in existence...The machinery of the Atlantic was constructed by Stillman, Allen, and Co., of the Novelty Works, New York...The Atlantic, as well as the other vessels building for the same line, are so constructed as to be converted into vessels of war in a few days, should necessity require'.
