Violent Display of Popular Indignation against the Austrian Marshal Haynau, at Bankside, 1850. 'The Marshal seems to have had little idea of the loathing and horror with which all classes in this country universally regarded his deeds in the land of the Magyars...he proceeded...to see the wonders of the great brewery of Messrs. Barclay and Perkins, in Southwark [London]...On inspecting the visitors' book, the clerks discovered that one of the parties was no other than the notorious Marshal Haynau. It became known all over the brewery in less than two minutes, and before the General...had crossed the yard, nearly all the labourers and draymen ran out with brooms and dirt, shouting out "Down with the Austrian butcher!" and other epithets of rather an alarming nature to the Marshal....His clothes were torn off his back.
