St. Martin's Northern Schools, Castle-Street, Long-Acre [in London], opened on Thursday last, 1850. 'A sermon was preached...by the Bishop of London, in St. Martin's Church, for the purpose of inaugurating the...Schools...the architect being Mr. James William Wild, and the builders Messrs. Haward and Nixon...The accommodation will include 400 boys and girls, and a large school-room for infants; with master's and mistress's separate residences. There is a covered playground at the top of the building - a novel feature - which extends the whole length of it (100 feet)...The Bishop...took for his text on the present occasion Mark x., verse 14: "Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of heaven."...secular instruction must...be largely promoted.
