Opening of the Whitehaven and Furness Junction Railway - St. Bees College, 1850. 'St. Bees, with its celebrated college, where a university education is obtained for a less sum per annum than would be paid to a country schoolmaster. St. Bees, too, is noted as a fashionable and agreeable watering-place'. St Bees, now in Cumbria, was formerly part of Cumberland. From "Illustrated London News", 1850.
