The Late Attack upon Marshal Haynau - the Coal-Cellar at the "George", Bankside, 1850. Austrian general Julius Jacob von Haynau hides from a London mob who attacked him for his 'sanguinary cruelty against the Hungarians...there were assembled about 500 persons, consisting of the brewers' men, coal-heavers, &c., the presence of the obnoxious visitor having become known...No sooner had the Marshal made his appearance...than he was surrounded, pelted, struck with every available missile, and even dragged along by his moustache, which afforded ample facilities to his assailants, from its excessive length, it reaching nearly down to his shoulders. Still battling with his assailants, he ran in a frantic manner along Bankside until he came to the George public-house...The furious throng rushed in after him, threatening to do for the "Austrian Butcher".'
