[Politician, slave owner, plantation owner, Confederate States Army soldier: 7th South Carolina Infantry; advocate of "white man's government"; publicly called for the assassination of a black state legislator Benjamin F. Randolph - after Randolph's assassination by three men in broad daylight, Aiken was detained by state authorities on suspicion of being an accessory-before-the-fact. He was freed on $5,000 bond, and no-one was ever brought to trial for Randolph's murder].
