Grand National Archery Meeting on the Race-Ground, Shrewsbury, 1854. 'During the shooting of the arrows at the hundred yards' distance, and which occupied until nearly two o'clock, the number of visitors to the field rapidly increased: a large concourse of spectators, including a great number of gaily-dressed ladies, were merrily engaged in crossing and re-crossing the shooting-ground, aa they followed the archers in their "overs" from opposite target to target...The shooting re-commenced after luncheon, the ladies taking their places at the targets...The numbers specified for them to shoot each day were, four dozen at sixty yards, and two dozen at fifty yards...The scene was now of a most animating and interesting description - nearly the whole length from the one side of the race course to the other presenting a formidable front of archers...'.
