Barracks of Cassim Pacha, in Constantinople, 1854. Crimean War. View of '...the Barracks behind the arsenal, on the Golden Horn, in which the Russian prisoners are kept...The prisoners have all been well treated; though the close quarters to which they are naturally confined, and the great heat, are complained of. They are supplied with provisions by a Protestant Armenian, thus ensuring full weight and good quality; though it may be doubtful, whether the Turks, through whose hands every thing passes, do not help themselves to a part...One of the missionaries resident here, went to see the Russian prisoners, and offered them New Testaments; which they, however, respectfully declined, out of fear lest they should get into some trouble in Russia with them'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854.
