Eaux Chaudes, Pyrenees, 1854. Spa town in the valley of the Gave d'Ossau in the French Pyrenees. 'Passing on, the road ascends a long and steep ascent, and the limestone cliffs begin to rise higher and higher; innumerable streams shoot out at every crevice; and the boxwood, which seems to favour limestone, appears wherever it has a chance. The road now commences a series of ups and downs - sometimes descending almost to the level of the ever-roaring Gave; and at others, clinging to the sides of precipices rising two or three hundred feet above it. The opposite side (the right) is not at all so precipitous; and here we begin to see the marble quarries in profusion'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854.
