Her Majesty's New Castle of Balmoral, 1854. View of the north-east front of Queen Victoria's royal residence in Scotland, '...as it will appear when finished...The design consists of a massive square tower, about 100 feet in height, flanked on two sides by large squares of building, three stories and upwards in height...The new buildings...are erected wholly of beautiful grey granite...The design displays, in many parts, masses of beautifully and carefully detailed carvings and enriched mouldings, such as are seldom wrought in obdurate, but enduring material like granite...it is not expected that these, or the other square of buildings, which is mainly intended for the accommodation of the domestics, can be finished for at least two years to come; so that the old Castle, shown in the background of the view, will be required for the accommodation of her Majesty's suite during that interval'.
