Bridge across the Cauvery, at Trichinopoly, 1854. Landscape in south India, from '...a short distance above the Bridge, on the western, or up-stream side of the northern approach, on the island of Seringam, [showing] the Trichinopoly Rock...Until recently no bridge crossed either stream; the passage being effected by two public ferry rafts...The Bridge is built entirely of brick, and covered with white Chunam plaster. The foundations are of wells sunk nine feet in the sandy bed of the river, and are secured by a retaining wall between the piers. The arches are elliptic, 49 feet in span, and rising 12 feet from the springs...The roadway is 25 feet wide...the total length of the Bridge from wing to wing is 1885 feet...The Bridge was designed and built by Major Edward Lawford, of the Madras Engineers'.
