Cape Hunting Dogs, in the Gardens of the Zoological Society, Regent's-Park, 1854. African wild dogs at London Zoo. 'The Hunting Dogs (Lycaon venaticus)...were, we believe, brought to this country by an officer in her Majesty's service, on his return from the Kaffir War...[they] exhibit marked attachment to their keeper, and allow him to enter their enclosure at all times with no better protection than a switch. The Hunting Dog extends from the Cape northward as far as Abyssinia, and ranges probably for nearly an equal distance on the west coast [of Africa]'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854.
