English Encampment on the Coast near Toula, in the Crimea, 1854. Crimean War: British military camp at the time the Battle of the Alma was fought. 'Captain Monck, of the 7th Fusiliers, was shot by a wounded Russian, to whom he was giving some water. Captain Dew was killed by a cannon-ball - his head cut clean off; Lieut. Cockerell was wounded in the leg by a shot which had passed through his horse; it was amputated, and he died. He was a splendid fellow. Lieut. Walsham, who ascended Mont Blanc, fell most gloriously. A gunner, who was sponging a gun, being shot in the arm, Walsham said to him, "Go at once to the rear - to the doctor"; and not wishing to lose time, he took his place at the gun, and was shot while sponging it'. After a sketch by Lieutenant Bredin of the Royal Artillery. From "Illustrated London News", 1854.
