'The design is from the pencil of Mr. David Roberts, R.A...painted by John Absolon and Frederick Fenton...London and Paris are represented by two female figures...both have drawn the sword in the cause of the oppressed; and they hold forth the laurel crown to reward the victor...Peace bearing her olive-branch...Victory bearing the banners of England, France, and Turkey, over Constantinople. Above is Fame, recording the names of those who have fallen in the defence of the liberty of mankind...an obelisk, with medallic portraits of the Sovereigns of France and England....Beneath the central figures are inscribed the words "Side by side in peace or war"'.
